Often known only for its size and economic resilience, Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, is also a hub of creativity. Through projects like Dharavi Art Room and Colorbox, the community has been using art to challenge stereotypes and empower its youth.
The Dharavi Art Room, co-founded by Himanshu S. and Aqui Thami, provides children and women a platform to express themselves through painting, photography, and storytelling. Their murals now adorn school walls, alleyways, and public buildings—vibrant declarations of dignity and identity.
Dharavi’s art scene isn’t just about murals. Handmade pottery, leatherwork, and recycled art showcase the ingenuity of its residents. These works often blur the line between craft and art, demanding a redefinition of what “high art” means.
By transforming everyday spaces into exhibitions, Dharavi is proving that creativity knows no boundaries, and that beauty can flourish even in the most unlikely settings.
