Contemporary Art from Chittagong Hill Tracts: Indigenous Voices Rising

The Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), home to diverse indigenous communities like the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and others, is witnessing a quiet but powerful artistic emergence. Contemporary art from this region blends deep-rooted traditions with modern forms, allowing indigenous voices to rise and resonate across Bangladesh and beyond.

For generations, the art of the CHT was expressed through everyday objects—woven textiles, wood carvings, ceremonial masks, and mural-style wall decorations. These traditions continue, but today’s indigenous artists are expanding their expression into painting, photography, installations, and digital media. Their work explores identity, displacement, nature, gender roles, and political struggles, often reflecting the tensions between tradition and modernity.

Artists like Kanak Chanpa Chakma have brought national attention to indigenous life through vibrant paintings that capture the rhythms of hill life and the quiet strength of its women. Younger artists from Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachari are now participating in national exhibitions, art residencies, and international workshops, using contemporary techniques to highlight social and environmental concerns unique to their communities.

Art institutions in Dhaka are slowly recognizing the value of these narratives. Special exhibitions and cultural exchanges are providing platforms for CHT artists to be seen and heard. Social media has also become a tool for these creators to bypass traditional gallery systems and reach a global audience directly.

This artistic movement is not just about aesthetics—it’s about empowerment. By reimagining their heritage through a modern lens, indigenous artists from the Hill Tracts are reclaiming their stories and challenging dominant narratives.
