Phulkari: The Embroidered Soul of Punjab

Phulkari, meaning “flower work,” is one of Punjab’s most cherished embroidery traditions. This intricate art form dates back centuries and holds a vital place in Punjabi culture, especially among women. Traditionally, Phulkari is done on handwoven cotton fabric called khaddar using vibrant silk threads in geometric and floral patterns.

Phulkari was more than decoration; it was a storytelling medium for women who expressed emotions and social themes through their needlework. The embroidery was commonly used for shawls, dupattas, and headscarves, particularly as part of wedding trousseaus.

Modern designers have revived Phulkari, integrating it into jackets, bags, sarees, and home decor. Despite evolving trends, the traditional methods and symbolism remain intact, making Phulkari both a cultural emblem and a fashion statement.
