Dhiren Shasmal, hailing from a remote village in West Bengal’s Medinipur district, exhibited an innate artistic talent from a young age. Despite the early loss of his father and financial constraints within his family, his exceptional passion for art stood out. Recognizing his potential, a relative advocated for his relocation to Kolkata, enabling him to pursue greater artistic opportunities and nurture his talent further.
With determination and support from his family, Dhiren enrolled in the Government Art College in the city of Kolkata. His admission was based on a showcase of his talent, which impressed the mentors and faculty. Throughout his time in college, he found inspiration from his teachers, senior students, and renowned artists like Shushim Das, Manoj Sarkar, and Khudiram Patra. Despite the challenges, Dhiren excelled in his studies, specializing in applied art and graduating with first class in 1975.
After completing his education, Dhiren embarked on a career at renowned advertising agencies such as Scorpio Advertising, Grand Advertising, and then joined Mahanagar Patrika, specializing in crafting hand-drawn illustrations and campaigns for various products and initiatives. Dhiren’s exceptional talent earned him widespread acclaim, resulting in numerous awards and accolades for his innovative designs. His mastery of hand drawings, particularly in pen and ink, was unparalleled.
Dhiren’s artistic prowess flourished, leading him to diversify his portfolio, designing pavilions for esteemed events like book fairs and projects for government departments. His mastery extended to crafting high-budget conceptual Durga Puja Pandals, earning him acclaim through numerous prestigious competitions and sustained success, showcasing his remarkable versatility and boundless creativity.
His intricate pen and ink illustrations captivated publishers along the famed book lane, College Street. Dhiren contributed his talents to esteemed publishing houses like Dey’s Publisher, Nirmol Book Agency, Karuna Prakashani, Sishu Sahitya Samsad, Rubi Publisher, Kishore Bharati Publication, Model Publisher, etc.With over 300 books to his credit, he became the preferred illustrator for esteemed authors like Sankar, Mahasweta Devi, Ashapurna Devi, Prafula Roy, Baren Gangopadhyay, Atin Bandyopadhyay, Nimai Bhattacharjee, among others, designing book covers and more. His outstanding work earned him numerous prestigious awards and accolades in the book world. For nearly two decades, he dedicated himself to the world of publishing, balancing his work with regular art exhibitions.
Dhiren faced a setback when he was bedridden for two years due to an incident, interrupting his career trajectory. However, after recovering, he returned to his passion for art with renewed vigor, focusing on painting and exploring new avenues. His work caught the eye of curators and art promoters, leading to numerous exhibitions across India and international recognition.
In the early 2010s, Dhiren ventured into the hospitality industry, receiving a significant commission from Mayfair Hotel and Resorts to decorate one of their resorts. This marked the beginning of a long-standing collaboration, with Dhiren contributing his masterpieces to multiple resorts over the years. His versatility and dedication to detail have made him a sought-after artist in both commercial and fine art circles.
Artistic Philosophy and Legacy Throughout his career, Dhiren Shasmal remained restless in his pursuit of artistic exploration. He embraced different styles, subjects, and techniques, always pushing the boundaries of his creativity. His ideology, rooted in the belief that life is short and art is an endless journey of discovery, shaped his prolific output and unwavering dedication.
Despite his success, Dhiren never compromised on the quality and intricacy of his work, pouring his heart and soul into every piece. His punctuality and disciplined work ethic ensured that nothing hindered his artistic journey. Continuously exhibiting his work and garnering appreciation from audiences worldwide, Dhiren’s legacy as a versatile and passionate artist continues to inspire generations to come.
Debarshi Shasmal is an artist by nature, inheriting his artistic abilities from his father, Dhiren Shasmal. Growing up surrounded by his father’s artistic world, art became an integral part of his daily life from childhood. After studying animation, he embarked on a career in the field, spending over a decade working on national and international projects. Throughout his career, he delved into new tools and techniques, achieving considerable success.
However, despite his accomplishments in animation, Debarshi’s heart yearned for his true passion: art. He made the bold decision to immerse himself in his father’s world of art, simultaneously exploring and assisting him in his artistic endeavors. Now, he is focused on developing a business that embodies core artistic values, aiming to connect with the world through innovative ideas and concepts that resonate with the new generation. Additionally, Debarshi has expanded his artistic endeavors to include painting and exhibiting his works on a national and international scale.
Sanchita Nath Shasmal entered the family fold fifteen years back, bringing with her a rich background in Fine Arts, she has done Master’s degree in Advertising. Her journey didn’t stop there; she delved into animation studies and honed her skills in renowned Animation and VFX studios. Notably, her contributions graced Oscar-winning films like “The Golden Compass” and “Life of Pi” during her stint at the prestigious Rhythm and Hues VFX company in Hollywood.
Art has always been Sanchita’s guiding passion, propelling her to explore diverse creative avenues. Much like Debarshi, she dedicated a solid 18 years to her career in the industry. Alongside her professional pursuits, she ventured into Designer Baking, crafting intricately designed cakes that caught the attention of luminaries like the superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Her culinary creations found their way into esteemed newspapers and magazines, further validating her talent.
Despite her flourishing career in the arts, Sanchita nurtured a deep-seated desire for entrepreneurship, a trait she inherited from her artist father-in-law. Fueled by this ambition, she took the bold leap of leaving her job to spearhead the venture of TIAC. Here, she steers the organization, weaving connections and conjuring fresh ideas to propel the business to new pinnacles. With a keen insight into clients’ needs, she delivers artistic solutions that enrich their lives and spaces. Sanchita’s journey has been a thrilling roller coaster ride, marked by her unwavering enthusiasm in the face of challenges, as she pursues her vision of crafting a business that leaves a lasting imprint.
