West Bengal Weather Update (October 10): Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Rain in South Bengal

On October 10, the weather across West Bengal has turned unstable due to a cyclonic circulation forming over Odisha, which is significantly influencing conditions across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for nine districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, and Nadia. Thunderstorms with gusty winds (30–40 km/h) and moderate to heavy rainfall are likely throughout the day.

For Kolkata and its surroundings, cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall have already set in. The IMD predicts light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning throughout Thursday and Friday. Residents may experience brief spells of intense rain during the afternoon and evening hours, possibly leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas.

In North Bengal, however, the intensity of rainfall has started to decline. After days of heavy rain and flooding, the weather is showing signs of gradual improvement. Light to moderate rain may continue, but no severe downpour is expected. The overall situation is likely to normalize over the weekend as the monsoon system weakens.

Meteorologists suggest that the unsettled weather pattern in South Bengal may continue until Sunday. The cyclonic circulation interacting with the retreating monsoon is prolonging the wet spell. Although it’s not expected to intensify into a major depression, localized heavy rain could still occur in coastal and adjoining districts.

Safety Advisory for Residents:

  • Carry umbrellas or raincoats when stepping out, as sudden showers are likely.
  • Avoid venturing into waterlogged or low-lying areas, especially near canals and rivers.
  • Fishermen are advised to stay away from the sea due to rough weather warnings.
  • Those planning long-distance travel should stay updated with local weather bulletins.

In summary, South Bengal will continue to face wet and stormy conditions, while North Bengal slowly transitions toward clearer skies. Citizens are urged to remain cautious and stay indoors during thunderstorm hours to ensure safety.
