Road Tripping Through the South Island

A road trip across New Zealand’s South Island is one of the most scenic adventures you can undertake. The island’s diverse landscapes—ranging from rugged coastlines to snow-capped mountains—make it ideal for exploration by car or campervan.

Start in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island, known for its English heritage and beautiful gardens. From there, head south to Lake Tekapo. Don’t miss the Church of the Good Shepherd, set against the backdrop of turquoise waters and the Southern Alps.

Next, make your way to Mount Cook National Park, home to Aoraki/Mount Cook. Hike the Hooker Valley Track for stunning alpine views. Continue to Wanaka, a charming town offering outdoor adventures and famous for the lone tree in Lake Wanaka.

Queenstown is the next logical stop—a vibrant town brimming with activities, great food, and stunning lake views. From there, a detour to Milford Sound is well worth the effort. The drive itself, through Fiordland National Park, is a highlight, with photo opportunities at every turn.

Finish your journey on the West Coast, visiting the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. The contrast of rainforests and ice is a unique spectacle.

A South Island road trip offers freedom, flexibility, and countless unforgettable moments. Just pack your sense of adventure and a camera.
