Once known as a resettlement colony, Kannagi Nagar has undergone an extraordinary transformation into Chennai’s largest public art district. With support from the St+art India Foundation, over 50 large-scale murals now grace its walls, turning this once-overlooked neighborhood into a vibrant cultural landmark.
These murals aren’t just decorative—they tell powerful stories of resilience, identity, and hope. International and local artists have collaborated with residents to create artworks that reflect their experiences and aspirations. From traditional kolams to vivid portraits, each wall in Kannagi Nagar has something to say.
The project began in 2020 with the goal of creating an inclusive space for artistic expression. Today, it serves as a case study in how art can revitalize urban communities and inspire pride among locals.
A visit to Kannagi Nagar is like walking through a live museum—dynamic, colorful, and deeply human. It is a shining example of how art can change perceptions and uplift communities.
